The Union Cabinet has approved the Ahmedabad (Sarkhej) – Dholera Semi High-Speed Rail Corridor project with an estimated cost of ₹20,667 crore. This 134-km rail corridor will improve connectivity between Ahmedabad and Dholera Smart City.
The project will connect Ahmedabad, Dholera Special Investment Region (DSIR), Dholera International Airport, and the Lothal National Maritime Heritage Complex. It is planned under the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan to support faster travel, better transport, and industrial growth.
Trains on this corridor are expected to run at speeds up to 220 kmph, which will reduce travel time between Ahmedabad and Dholera to less than one hour. The Ahmedabad–Dholera rail project is also considered an environmentally friendly transportation initiative, as it may help reduce carbon emissions and road congestion by encouraging public transport usage.
The rail project is expected to benefit around 284 villages and nearly 5 lakh people by creating better transportation and employment opportunities. It will also support eco-friendly transport with lower carbon emissions. The Ahmedabad–Dholera rail corridor is expected to be complete by 2030–31 and will play an important role in the development of Dholera Smart City.
